Turabek Khanum Mausoleum — The Jewel of Khorezm and the Princess of Legends
About This Destination
The Mausoleum of Turabek Khanum, located in Köneürgenç, is one of the most exquisite architectural masterpieces of medieval Turkmenistan. It was dedicated to Turabek Khanum, a Mongolian princess, daughter of Uzbek Khan, the ruler of the Golden Horde, and wife of Kutlug Timur, his deputy in Khorezm. Turabek Khanum is remembered as the patroness of women and was later canonized as a saint for her wisdom and compassion.
History
Her name is surrounded by romantic legends. One tells of a talented architect named Gulgardan, who loved the princess deeply. Turabek Khanum promised to marry him if he could build the most beautiful structure on earth. Gulgardan succeeded — he created a breathtaking mausoleum adorned with stunning geometric precision and colorful mosaics. Yet, Turabek Khanum chose Kutlug Timur instead. The heartbroken architect leapt to his death from the top of his masterpiece. The mausoleum remains an architectural gem of Khorezm. Its hexagonal central hall (about 100 square meters) is light, graceful, and richly ornamented with intricate mosaics of stars and flowers, symbolizing the heavens and eternity. Once crowned with a brilliant turquoise dome, it was considered the most perfect dome in Central Asia. Though the upper drum and glazed tabernacle have been lost to time, the mausoleum’s beauty and harmony still captivate all who visit. Today, the Turabek Khanum Mausoleum stands as a symbol of love, artistry, and faith, drawing pilgrims and admirers from across Turkmenistan and beyond.
