About This Destination

Shasenem Gala (also spelled Shasenem Kala) is an ancient fortress located near Köneürgenç in Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz Region, standing on the vast plains of the northern Karakum Desert. It is one of the most mysterious fortresses of ancient Khorezm, dating back to the 4th–3rd centuries BCE, and is part of the archaeological complex of ancient fortifications that once guarded the frontiers of the Khorezm civilization.

History

The fortress, built of mud-brick and clay, has a rectangular plan surrounded by powerful defensive walls and towers at each corner. Archaeologists believe it served both as a military stronghold and as a settlement center for the surrounding oasis communities. Local legends connect Shasenem Gala with romantic folklore — a princess named Shasenem is said to have lived here, her tragic love story inspiring generations of Turkmen poets and singers. Today, Shasenem Gala remains a symbol of the ancient strength and beauty of Khorezm, representing the fusion of military architecture and oral heritage. Its silent walls still echo with the stories of love, courage, and devotion that define Turkmen history.
